Well, we've got him and, listening to his speech this morning, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice are not going to be indicted for war crimes, Rashid Khalid is not going to be his advisor on the Middle East, there was a variation of the theme pathos to disguise the variation of the theme platitudes and all and sundry were thanked from Sarah Palin to God. This guy is intelligent, a maverick and certainly not one for making too many enemies; a political animal, a pragmatist and only time will tell to what extent there is also a machiavellian streak in him.
His references and thanks to God were par for the course, his praise for the "great nation" not too different from his predecessors and, while for European ears it was all a bit exaggerated, for Americans not at all over the top. America is a nation that trusts in the "gobbly gook" and the evidence would seem to suggest that the rest of the world is in for four more years of "gobbly gook" from this "great nation". Still, it will be nice to have an American president who is obviously intelligent, articulate and maybe even gifted and, perhaps, at least for now, I still want to hope a little bit.
