Demographics

One of the reasons the fascist unionist state was bound to fail in the north of Ireland was simple demographics. In 1922 Catholics constituted some 23% of the population, today the number is about 50%. In retrospect, only a wholesale ethnic cleansing could have guaranteed the continued existence of a solely protestant state. It is in considering this that we might see some hope for Palestine. Already the majority of the people living in the area that was mandate Palestine are Arabs and, of course, there are still those Palestinians in the diaspora to be accounted for. However, if this should give us reason to hope we should not be too optimistic and we should not be too optimistic because there are no signs that the Zionist project is coming to an end and this is what is needed if there is to be any just and lasting solution in Palestine.
One method that the Zionist might employ to prolong their project is outlined by Jonathan Cook; it is the "transfer" of the so-called "Israeli Arabs" who live in Israel and who constitute 20% of the Jewish state's population, it is a solution that is, according to Cook, supported by a majority of Jews and it is, of course, a euphemism for ethnic cleansing.(1) If applied, it would, of course, mean that the Israelis could succeed where the unionists in the north of Ireland failed. Not to matter that some 80% of the "Israeli Arabs" would prefer not to be moved from their homes, despite their status in Israel as third class citizens, into a "state", which would be anything but sovereign and where their acceptance by their Palestinian kin is equally as doubtful. In return Israel would "return" some of the land that it is illegally occupying.
We would do well to see through this dangerous nonsense, that the Zionists refer to as "transfer", for what it is and it is, of course, ethnic cleansing. Moreover, when Israel withdraws from the occupied territories it is only following UN Resolution 242; Israel has no right to be in there. Finally, is there any solution regarding those who were expelled in 1948 from their homes? The reality for Israel is that the demographic time bomb that is ticking will, no matter what methods the Zionists undertake to stop it ticking, continue to tick.
Finally, there is an interesting little article in today's 'Jerusalem Post', where it is reported that a study has shown that "some 20 percent of the current population of the Iberian Peninsula has Sephardi Jewish ancestry;"(2) We could well have the spectacle of representatives of the "Jewish State" doing a little bit of recruiting in Spain in the near future. After all, with Russia's chief rabbi, Berel Lazar, saying that, at least, 40% of the Russian immigrants to Israel are not Jewish,(3) with the Zionist state appealing more and more only to tactless Torah thumping terrorists, with the demographic battle being lost, well, who knows, they might be telling the Arabs in the near future that they are really Jews. Anything, to keep the Zionist project on track.
