It only gets worse

It only gets worse; there is a report, taken from the 'Washington Post', in 'Democracy Now' today that the "hope and change" man is considering appointing Richard Holbrooke as his envoy to South Asia.(1) Remember this is the man who went to Indonesia in 1977 at time when the Suharto regime was committing genocide in East Timor and who then actually then helped speed up the flow of weapons to Indonesia, the same guy who then turns up in Bosnia in the mid nineties just in time to help Bill Clinton facilitate the ethnic cleansing that was going on there.(2)
With about 150 million Muslims in Indian and 25 million Pashtuns in Pakistan and another 25 Million in Afghanistan, Mr Holbrooke certainly has some experience and, indeed, no little expertise for the job at hand. He has also shown in the past that he has the brazen hypocrisy to "get away" with jobs like this. Nevertheless, when I look at the Indian sub-continent I tend to get the impression that even Mr Holbrooke would be biting off a little more than he can chew. The "hope and change" man has not yet been inaugurated. However, the portents are there that there will be no change. Still, we can always hope, can't we?
