"Nie wieder Krieg vom deutschen Boden aus!"

There was me today having a wee look at the German Constitution and I would like to provide you with a little translation of Article 26, which states,"Actions that can facilitate and intentionally disrupt a harmonious co-existence of different states and their peoples, above all, preparing for the pursuit of a war of agression, are criminal acts against the constitution."1 Well, thousands of GIs are passing through Leipzig, Ramstein Air Base and the commercial airport at Frankfurt Hahn enroute for Bagdhad and Kabul and there are still 68,000 American troops based on German soil. Furthermore, a lot of those 68,000 service men and women are stationed at the only two American Central Commands that are outside the USA. These are EUCOM, which is responsible for Europe, the ex-Soviet Union and Turkey and AFRICOM for Africa. Both are based in Stuttgart where EUCOM had responsibility for Africa until AFRICOM was established a few months ago.
Now one wonders what would happen if German politicians actually picked up the courage to tell the Americans it is time for them to go. Well, their illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and their covert activities in Africa might be more difficult to pursue that is for sure. Of course, "Uncle Sam" might just "damn, damn, damn" the ungrateful Germans turn either to his loyal ally "Blighty" or to Berlusconi's Italy or to Warsaw, Prague or Budapest and continue business as usual. Therefore, what is the point in upsetting the Americans? Well, perhaps, we should go back to Article 26 of the German Constitution and "Actions that can facilitate and intentionally disrupt a harmonious co-existence of different states and their peoples, above all, preparing for the pursuit of a war of agression, are criminal acts against the constitution." Yes, the German government is breaking its own laws, while it facilitates "Uncle Sam" breaking international law and what the Americans do, or where they go, after they leave Germany isn't really that important. It is time to take a stand or rather it is time for the Germans to keep those standards that they have set for themselves so that they can rightly say, "Nie wieder Krieg vom deutschen Boden aus!" (no more wars from German soil).
