Israel closes crossings into Gaza

It is not often that I get into the nitty-gritty of this, that, or the next "incident" in the occupied territories or in "Israel" proper. For me, everything that has happened is incidental to how and why the Zionist state was founded. Indeed, everything that has occured since follows a pattern that was established at the end of the forties. Sometimes, however, any rational analysing of what is happening has to be suspended and I am forced to confront myself with something that is taking place here and now, that is completely unacceptable and that, for all of us, who ignore or even accept it, is an affront to our dignities as human beings. The historical context doesn't always seem so important, "Queen Reason" gives way to the more emotional me and I get angry.
The top UN aid official in Gaza, John Ging, says, "“The situation here in Gaza is desperate. There’s 750,000 refugees depending on handouts of food from UNRWA. Why? Because the economy has been destroyed in this period of time when crossings have been closed. These people have been reduced to be dependent on this food, and now we can’t even get that food into Gaza. It’s a disaster.”(1) The question I would like to ask is, why are men, women and children suffering for no fault of their own?
The reason given is Hamas "terrorists" are firing rockets into the south of Israel. Of course, I am not there so it is difficult to report on the nature or extent of those attacks on Israel. What is, however, interesting is that I skimmed about a hundred blogs, written by Israelis and only one of them even mentioned Palestinians. On the one hand, the evidence would seem to suggest that most Israelis are living very normal lives, thinking about the crap that most people in the west think of and not feeling very threatened at all. On the other hand, it might be an interesting exercise to skim one hundred Palestinian blogs and I would be very surprised if any of them didn't mention Israel. Perhaps, we should ask ourselves a number of questions; who is being occupied, who is being opressed, who is being attacked, who is being denied basic human rights? Once we have answered these questions, we might be a bit closer to knowing why men, women and children suffering for no fault of their own?
