Nuclear-Weapon-Free Middle East

'Haaretz' reports: "At the conclusion of a month-long conference in New York, the 189 signatories of the international nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT) called for an international conference in 2012 with the aim of establishing a nuclear-weapon-free Middle East." Obama responds by saying that he "strongly opposed efforts to single out Israel on non-proliferation and would oppose actions that jeopardize Israel's national security," while Netanyahu declares that Israel is not obligated by any NPT resolution.

Yet, elsewhere we can read that the 189 members of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty have reached agreement on a series of steps towards disarmament, "including a 2012 conference to discuss a nuclear-free zone in the Middle East. This sort of logic is already pointing us towards some sort of final resolution which says a nuclear free Middle East, except for Israel.
